When you begin your research into beach vacations for an upcoming getaway, you may already know exactly what activities you want to focus on during your days at the beach. But there are many various beach activities to enjoy, and it may be a great chance to try one that you have not done before. Let’s take a look at some.
Surfing is probably the number one activity people associate with the beach. It is somewhat dependant on the area you are heading too, however. For instance, in Florida the Gulf coast of the state provides beautiful sandy beaches but calm water that is not conducive to surfing. On the Atlantic side of the state though, there are some terrific surfing beaches to visit due to the wave actions from the open water combined with the bottom contour of the ocean as it approaches land. Daytona Beach has long been known for its history and culture in the surfing world. The bottom line is if surfing is your priority when you plan your beach vacations, then you will certainly want to choose carefully. You will want to look into those locations that not only accommodate surfing, but also offer the level of surfing that you seek and your experience allows.
Bodyboarding or Boogie Boarding is a terrific way for one not experienced in surfing to ride the waves. If you are heading out for a beach vacation where there are some waves to ride but do not know how to surf, then bodyboarding is a must! It involves a short board, readily available and not very expensive, that you ride on prone as opposed to standing like you do on a surfboard. The learning curve is gentle and you can go into the sport with no prior experience confident that you will have a lot of fun. This makes it a perfect event for those heading out on vacations to the beach whether you are a pro at boogie boarding or have never tried it before.
Skimboarding is pretty much the opposite of surfing. In this instance you begin on the beach, and then enter the water on the outgoing wave. It involves standing in position as the wave approaches, then with careful timing running at the receding wave with your board followed by dropping and mounting the board with your momentum propelling you. The board is thin, not very buoyant, and skims along the surface of the water by hydroplaning. If you successfully reach the crest of the wave, you can launch off of it or turn back in toward the beach. Skimboarding requires great balance and athleticism, and can be a great fun challenge on your vacation. One of the nice things about it is that if you have a beach and pretty much a piece of plywood, you have the ingredients to give skimboarding a go!
